(21. July 1961., Komló –)
József Füzesi was born in Komló, and at present, lives in Dombóvár. He started his artistic activity in 1996. He first worked with tempera, later – with the help of his mentor, Teréz Orsós – began to use oil paint. He paints on wood-fibre plates and linen. He is considered as a naive painter. He tends to represent the traditional culture, way of life and emotions of the romas, but still lives, landscapes and portraits are also his favourite topics.
Füzesi’s first exhibition was arranged in Pécs in 1997. It was followed by several exhibitions in Pécs and one in Komló. Since the mid-nineties he has been participating in the Roma Art Workshops and collective exhibitions of fellow gypsy artists. He introduced his works of art in Budapest, at the Gallery of the Roma Parliament in 2002 – the title of the exhibition was The painter of new savages. His works could be seen at various thematic exhibitions, such as The contemporary roma religious arts in Hungary (2003), and the exhibition presenting the collection of Gypsy House in the Valley of Arts. On the cover page of the volume, gypsy fate – containing selected articles of the conferences dealing with the past and present of the gypsy people –, Füzesi’s picture, titled Gendarmes can be seen.
