Róbert Rosenberg, Miklós

Robert Miklós Rosenberg was born in Ungvár (then part of the Austro- Hungarian Monarchy). At the age of four he suffered a total loss of hearing as a consequence of scarlet fever. He spent six years in a school for deaf children in Budapest and went to high school in Uzhgorod. Between 1923 and 1924, during the summer vacations he attended the School of Painting in Nagybanya and developed his skills under the tutelage of János Thorma. In 1930 he got a diploma in artistic carpentry and furniture design on School For Artistic Woodwork.
 
From 1931 to 1932 he attended the School of Painting of István Szőnyi and took evening classes for poster designing as a pupil of Robert Berény in Budapest. Between 1932 and 1937 he was a student at Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. (Teachers: L. Kandó, A. Benkhard and N.L. Varga). Between 1937 and 1938 he conducted painting courses for 12 students (best known became Ország Lili).
 
From 1939 to 1940 he was a member of the Artists-Association of Carpathia, he was teaching assignement in Ungvár. Between 1941 and 1944 he worked as a graphic designer and advisor to the Company STYX (Budapest). 
 
In 1943 he was arrestes for hiding Austrian Refugees (his sisters family), he was sentenced to 15 days of jail and subsequent laborcamp. With the help of Prof. Szőnyi he was spared the jail and labor camp. This most likely saved his life.
 
In 1944, after the change of the government (Nazi-regime) he was arrested again. In November with the help of the Red Cross he managed to escape from Camp Obuda. Under Rosovszky Miklós he became a member of the Red Cross and was courier of the Swiss Embassy. 
 
In 1945 he returned to Uzhgorod (it became a part of the Soviet Union) to search for his parents, he never got permission again to leave the country. In 1946 he became a member of the Artist Federation of the Ukraine and two years later of the Artist Fond of Soviet Union. In September 1956 he managed to get visitors visa to Hungary and in November he escaped to Vienna. Later he got a Scholarship in Paris (Congres pour la Libertè de la Culture) In 1978 he became a member of the International Club Of Artists (IKC). Since 1979 he leads a sequestered life.
