After graduating from high school, in 1995 Barakonyi joined the staff of Gömb TV as cameraman on the magazine program “Mi Hetünk” (Our Week). In 1997 he completed the photography course at the Szellemkép Free School. In 1998 he became a photo-reporter for the [origo] internet news site. Since 2001 he has been a member of the Young Photo Artists’ Studio, and since December 2003 a photo-reporter for the Index.hu internet news site. Between 2003 and 2006 he was the recipient of a Pécsi József scholarship.
In 2006 he won the Lucien Hervé and Rodolf Hervé award, and in 2007 at the Recontres des Arles festival he was presented with the Photo Service Publishing Award, and in 2011 he was awarded the NKA André Kertész scholarship. He has exhibited his photos in several cities around the world, at photo festivals and art fairs, and in museums, these included the Chateau d’Eau in Toulouse and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai. He has also featured in the “Month of Photography” in Lodz, Krakow and Paris. His works are included in the photographic collection of the Chateau d’Eau in Toulouse, France, and of the Miskolc Gallery, Miskolc, Hungary.
