Tel.: (36 1) 3317603 He was twenty in 1956. The revolution and prison made a painter of me. Painting was a land of freedom in an occupied and oppressed country. My first significant successes were achieved by the Ubu collages (1980-85). The series, composed of about fifty pieces, was the intersection of an artistic extension of Alfred Jarry's play about Ubu, my earlier experiments with collage, and my poltical experience. My exhibition in 1992 at Lajos Street was an important station of my carreer: I showed the best of my work after 1986, including the mixed technique pictures that were made in the euphoria of the system change. Since 1990, I have become an arts writer as well, but I would be embarrassed if had to write about my own pictures. Since tehe sistem change, I have also been working as an arts organiser for the Society of Hungarian Painters. It was my interest in the work of my colleagues that launched me in that direction. Today, I see nothing in the world that could provide directions for life and art. There is no direction, no securé foundation point. As human beings and as artists, we can only trust ourselves. The starting point and the goal must both be determined by our own measure. That is hopelessly little and infinitely large at the same time. That is the difficulty of contemporary art.
The labyrinth, as a plastic problem, has become important for me in two respects in recent years. On the one hand, because it is inherently connected with the concept of the descent into hell (the process of trials, purification and finding ourselves). This realisation has helped by opening the possibility of artistic adaptations of existential and community processes. On the other hand, I had already noted the primary formal opportunities inherent in the motif of the labyrinth. In several of my pictures, I made use of the aspect of the motif that expresses the pressing complexity of the world, while I also painted labyrinths that could actually be travelled through.
In more recent years, my focus of attention gradually shifted from the problematic of the labyrinth to the sculptural and conceptual theme of the network. In essence, a NETWORK is a more complex, even less transparent labyrinth. In contrast with the labyrinth, which can be mastered with some luck and perseverance and will lead to the goal after its trials, the network consigns us to eternal wandering, culminating at best in an uncertain sense of the pressing difficulties of our lives and the world, but not a solution: it corresponds to the intertwined, multilayered and inextricable multiplicity of phenomena, the irrational and absurd world.
