LENGYEL, Lajos
Photo Artist, Book Artist
(Makó, 5th December, 1904 – Budapest, 10th, January, 1978)
Lengyel was relieved from her typist job in 1923. He moved to the capital from his hometown in 1927, where he first worked at the Fővárosi Nyomda /Capital Publishing Company/, then from 1930, as design works-manager, at the Hungária Nyomda /Hungári Publishing Company/ lead by Albert Kner. During the meantime he became acquainted with Lajos Kassák, and became involved in the group named the Munka-kör /Work-group/ in 1929. This is where he began dealing with photography and joined the group named Szociófotó /Socio-Photography/. From 1930 onwards he designed advertisements for pharmaceutical drugs and cover designs for a variety of books. Lengyel also prepared photomontages during the course of the 1930’s. Following the Second World War he became the technical head of the Független Nyomda /Independent Publishing House/ (1945–1948), then was the president of the Kossuth Publishing House, a post he held from 1949 to 1969. From 1970 until 1978 he was the president of the Printing Union of Hungary. Besides these activities he designed a number of books, and only began actively dealing with photography again, following his retirement, between 1967 and 1970. With the technique of the preparation of photographs without a camera (photogram) he further enriched the world of montage techniques with newer abstractions. Both as the managing director of publishing houses, and as a designing artist he was one of the true founders of high quality large-scale book publishing in Hungary. He made use of the array of tools consisting of photographs and montages, produced by him during the course of the 1930’s for the formulation of his goal oriented graphical oeuvre. In 1961 he received the Kossuth Award, furthermore the golden and bronze award of the IBA of Leipzig for the book entitled Alberto. He was awarded the Gutenberg Award in 1964 and the Miklós Kis Tótfalusi Award in 1974.
