MÁRK, Anna
(painter, graphic artist)
(Budapest, 13th July, 1928 – )
1946–1950: College of Fine Arts, master: Róbert Berény. Between 1950 and 1956 she worked at the Fővárosi Bábszínház /Puppet Theater of Budapest/ together with Vera Bródy, József Jakovits, and Lili Ország. Between 1956 and 1959 she lived in Germany, then from 1959 onwards in Paris. During the course of the 1960’s she worked as a member of the group of artists named the Group Carré de Paris. Between 1982 and 1983 she was the scholarship holder of the Cité des Arts. Her art books (livres d'artiste) were published from 1980 onwards: Concerto (1980); Genèse (1983); Petit Glossaire (1983); Heraklit Fragmente (1984); Un dessein pour chaque mois (1995). Mark’s painting was characterized by the usage of abstract, geometrical forms, and the aspiration towards textual effects. Her works realized the synthesis of constructivism and lyrical abstraction. From the end of the 1970’s she worked on a series of relief works, which stretched the boundaries of imagery expression. Light and fractal effects became her main interests from the 1980’s. Around this period the white color became dominant in her relief works (Knosszosz-sorozat /Knosszosz series/, 1987–89). From the second half of the decade Mark’s works composed of black, white, and gray contrasts were prepared with gouache and pencil technique onto sifter prints (Struktúrák-sorozat /Structures-series/, 1989).
