PINCZEHELYI, Sándor

PINCZEHELYI, Sándor
painter, graphic artist
(8 July, 1946, Szigetvár - )

1966-1970: Teacher's Training College of Pécs, 1969-1977: research worker of the Janus Pannonius Museum; 1977-1979: the curator of the Galery of Pécs; From 1999 he was a docent of the Janus Pannonius University of Arts and Sciences of Pécs; From 2001: he was the head of the Visual Arts Department of the Janus Pannonius University of Arts and Sciences of Pécs. 1975 and 1980: Award for the Propagation of Socialist Culture; 1980: Studio Award of the Art Gallery of Budapest; 1983: Award of the 12th National Graphics Biennial of Miskolc; 1984: the B. Award of Norwegian International Print Festival in Fredrikstad; 1985: the Educational Award of the County Council of Baranya; 1987: the Award of the 14th National Graphics Biennial of Miskolc; 1989: Munkácsy Award; 1995: Pro-Comunitate, Pécs; 1997: the small cross of the Legion of Honors of the Hungarian Republic. The artistic career of Piczehelyi was extremely complex and manifold: graphical artist, poster designer, and as such one of the founders of the international known DOPP group, a member of the avant-garde group which acquired its fame under the name title of Pécsi Műhely csoport. He was also an artistic coordinator, the Pécsi Galéria gained its national fame under his 22 year leadership, he also worked as an art teacher. His career began as a poster graphic designer, which, whether he dealt with commercial or political work involved concentrated reduction, and a suitable emblematic representational mode. Pócs discovered in during the 1970's that commercial posters operated with such visual elements, which if taken from their original surroundings and multiplied and are placed into different coherences, gained different meanings. His image "patent-collection" evolved quite early on: the sickle and hammer, the street stone, and star, later the paprika, different animals (sheep, pigs, geese), the Hungarian national colors: red-white-green (piros-fehér-zöld [PFZ]), which had an exalted social symbolic value, as well as having expired as commercial trademarks (ring on Hungarian sausages [known as: kolbász]). This was registered early on by Pinczehelyi, both in his graphical and his unique artistic works. The neo-avant-garde movement of Hungary during the end of the 1960's and the 1970's, completely nationalized Pinczehelyi's usage of photographs of concept-art and its affection for serial works, furthermore enriched his picturesque realization with ironic, political overtones. The manner in which Piczehelyi manipulated the symbols of the "working class and peasantry" (Sarló /Sickle/, 1973; Hengerek I-II /Cyliners I.-II./, 1975; Egy földmûves emlékére /In memorial of an agricultural worker/, 1977; Földmûvesek emlékére /In memory of Agricultural workers/, 1977), was similar in form to the essence of international serial and concept art movements. At the same time he enriched his picturing methods with political and verbal content, as well as ironic messages (Az utcakõ a proletariátus fegyvere /The street-stone the weapon of the proletariats/, 1973; Utcakõ-Csillag /Street-stone - Star/, 1973). The unfetishist usage of these trivial picturesque elements, such as the five-pointed star encrusted with street-stones, the sickle and hammer combined with his body completely changed the meaning of those. The works were prepared as photographs, graphics, and video or within the framework of installations. It was a typical feature of the trans-avant-garde postmodern movement of Hungary during the 1980's, that the masters of neo-avant-garde and the middle generation of the concept art movement easily adjusted themselves to the new trends. This meant the multiple versatile broadening of the collection of techniques made use of by Pinczehelyi: the usage of colored photographs and sifter-prints were enriched by the introduction of installations (A nagy PFZ táj /The great PFZ landscape/, 1983) and assemblages (In memoriam Andy Warhol, 1987) furthermore the series of emblems with the motifs of fish, Coca-Cola boxes, dried grass, straw, and paprika (PFZ paprika, 1981; Hal, háló, csillag, Coca-Cola, /Fish, net, star, coca-cola/ 1983; Vörös csillag, zöld Coca-Cola rajz /Red star, green coca-cola drawing/,1983). Around the middle of the 1980's the slightly impersonal sifter prints and photographs of Pinczeheyli were replaced by the lively and sensual plane formation of painting (Piros-fehér-zöld birkák /Red, white and green sheep/, 1985; Mák /Poppy-seed/ 1986), or large-scale installations, such as the large five-point star, made of straw (Szalma torta /Straw cake/, 1988). Within his works prepared during the course of the 1980's and 1990's the impression that the symbols and emblems of Pinczehelyi, due to their being painted in a very expressive manner, elevated them to works of art, bringing forth the trivializations, bearing meanings which could become universal messages, beyond their personal mythological context. The Spartakiád, produced in 1988 is such a work, where the arches of two nudes lean towards each other from the planes of two large-scale picture planes, holding a sickle and a hammer, while discrete sickles and hammers float upon the yellow and white background. By the 1990's the vehement of this momentous image production slowed, while newer iconographic elements enriched the artist's collection of instruments (Motorosok /Motorists/, 1991; Tornászok /Gymnasts/, 1991; Kék tehén /Blue Cow/, 1992; Pásztor /Shepard/, 1999), the picture plains became less developed, and Pinczehelyi began to make use of large color fields.
