SAMU, Géza
sculptor
(2 Dec., 1947, Kocsola – 6 Oct., 1990, Békésszentandrás)
Self-Educated. 1975: 1983: Award of the Studio of Young Artists; 1985: Award of the Spring Show in Salgotarján; 1986: Award of the Summer Show in Debrecen. 1988: Award for Hungarian Art. 1989: Mukácsy Award; 1990: the Grand Award of the 1st Hungarian Sculpturing Biennial and the Main Award of the 20th Open Air Sculpture Exhibition in Salgotarján. 1991: Biennial Award of the 12th National Small Sculpture Exhibition in Pécs. He received the posthumous Life-tree Award. Samu’s career began in the beginning of the 1970’s. He produced sculptures, which formulated the items and tools of fading peasant culture, the requisites of folk culture. He built elements of folk tales and ballads into his works resembling idols, puppets and dolls. His primary material was wood, but he also worked with metal, stone, bones, and made use of seeds from plants, bird feathers in his works, as well as bronze and alabaster, later on in his career. In his installation entitled Vörös szerpentin /Red Serpentine/, of 1967 he brought forth a summarization of his previous works, and bid farewell to the direct mode of composition referring to folk culture. He began producing installations, environments, and assemblages incorporated into open air and exhibition interiors from then onwards. He created his anthropomorphic and zoomorphic sculptures in both small and large sizes. His most significant exhibition in Hungary was the Installációs kisérlet /Installation experiment/ of 1983, while abroad, his participation at the 43rd Biennial of Venice. His most significant work entitled Kisördög /Small Devil/, was prepared in a number of variations and sizes, from different materials. An elemental force radiates from his works, and his unique, unmatched style makes him one of the most significant sculptors of Hungary in the 20th century.
