ZÁBORSZKY, Gábor
painter
(17 April, 1950, Budapest - )
Professional Background:
1970-1974: College of Fine-Arts, Budapest; 1974-76: Further education in the field of graphic and mural art at the College of Fine-Arts; masters: György Kádár, Ignác Kokas, and Imre Kocsis. 1977-1980: Derkovics scholarship; 1982: the Award of the International Jury at the International Graphics Biennale of Norway, in Fredrikstad; 1995: Munkácsy Award. From 1980 he taught at the Fine- and Industrial-Arts High School and was the senior lecturer of the Industrial-Arts College of Budapest. In 1984 he partook in the conference entitled Grafika Fémlemezről /Metal Sheet Graphics/ held in Grado; in 1989 he was the guest of the Kunstgewerbe Schule and the Graz Academy in Basel; in 1992 he participated in the LAMPA- Congress in Budapest; in 1994 he worked in Bonn, as a scholarship holder of the city. Záborszky was the participant of the International Paper Symposium in Kyoto in 1995. In 1996 he was the scholarship holder of the city of Munich, then, in 1998, he was the guest of the University of Arts in Philadelphia. The questioning of traditional art forms and conventions and the vindication of his reformative intentions characterize his art from the middle of the 1970’s. The photograph was a significant element of his early graphical works, and in many instances pieces of soil and sand were incorporated into his paintings. His intention of breaking away from the flat surface and emerging into the space surrounding the canvas became more and more rigorous during the course of the 1980’s. His earliest grand-scale ‘animal figures’ were displayed at the exhibition entitled Új Szenzibilitás III for the first time, in 1985. His relief pieces produced of natural and man made materials, and his formations, which took space into their possession with an almost sculpturing intention, were produced through the synthesis of geometric design and have an organic and inscrutable nature. During the 1990’s, besides the utilization of gold and silver in the composition of his works, the usage of materials such as paper and papier-mâché gained greater significance. The relief works produced from these materials were arranged into sets of successions or coherent exhibition units through the unification of a single motif (e.g.: gate) or around one sole idea. Transcendental and mystic elements, recollections implicating day-to-day or veritable material concepts and abstract conceptual and factual form bearings dissolve into one another with a sense self-evident naturalness. He was the guest of the University of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1999. The City Art Museum of Győr published a book collecting his 25-year career in 2001, and put on a retrospective exhibition of his art in 2002. He has been working at the MEO Contemporary Art Gallery since 2004, where he has produced his thus far largest paper moldings.
