FRAGMENTS OF UTOPIAS
A VETÍTÉSEK IDŐPONTJAI
(a filmeket eredeti nyelven, angol felirattal vetítjük)
- MÁJUS 4., 19.00-20.30
ANTON VIDOKLE: Immortality for All: A Film Trilogy on Russian Cosmism, 2014-2017 (kb. 90 perc)
Anton Vidokle filmtrilógiája a mára nagyrészt elfelejtett orosz kozmisták utópiájáról szól, mely a felvilágosodást, a keleti filozófiát, az orosz ortodoxia hagyományait és a marxizmust kapcsolta össze egymással a 20. század elején. Az első részben visszatér a kozmista elmélet alapjaihoz (This Is Cosmos, 2014), a második rész a kozmizmus és a politika kapcsolatát vizsgálja (The Communist Revolution Was Caused By The Sun, 2015), a harmadik pedig a múzeum mint a feltámadás helyszínét elemzi. (Immortality and Resurrection for All!, 2017).
Vidokle filmje most először lesz bemutatva Budapesten; a trilógia számos, a kortárs művészet szempontjából fontos intézményben volt már látható, például a berlini Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt (HKW) Art Without Death: Russian Cosmism (2017) kiállításán.
- MÁJUS 5., 19.00- 20.30
ABANDONED (RE)CREATION: Off Season, 2018 (35 perc)
Az abandoned (re)creation művészpáros dokumentumfilmjének középpontjában egy szlovák fürdővárosban található elhagyatott szanatórium, a Machnáč áll. A film feltérképezi a 30-as évek elején épült konstruktivista épület történetét (építész: Jaromír Krejcar), amely a progresszió szimbólumából jutott el napjainkra egy üresen álló romhalmazig, amivel a tulajdonosai nem akarnak mit kezdeni. A teplicei fürdőszanatórium története kapcsán olyan kérdésekre kereshetjük a választ, minthogy hogyan illusztrálhatja a fürdéshez kapcsolódó kultúra, koreográfia az állam és a városi munkás közötti kapcsolatot?
CLARA IANNI: Free Form, 2013 (7 perc)
VIOLANA MURATAJ: My Birthday Celebration, 2011 (31 perc)
OLEKSIY RADYNSKI: Facade Colour: Blue, 2019 (22 perc)
ALEXANDRU SOLOMON: Tarzan’s Testicles, 2017 (107 perc)
A dokumentumfilm a kísérletsorozat emlékével foglalkozik a mai abkháziai munkatársakat megszólaltatva.

FRAGMENTS OF UTOPIAS
Screening series
Those buildings from the early and mid 20th century, which were at their times the symbols of modern society, are today often become ruins or transformed, unrecognizable memorabilias. Through presenting several contemporary videos and documentaries focusing on different architectural memory sites, our goal is to examine the failure of utopistic beliefs in technological and social development and progress.
How did the notion of specific buildings change, while often they kept their function? How can we understand the individual’s role in society through these architectural ruins? How the society as a mechanical apparatus appear at the beginning of the 20th century and what can we do today with that utopia’s architectural ruins?
The documentarist attitude is common in the works, however it is also important that they are research based and collaborative projects. With this curated screening series, our goal is, that through the presentation of works from the CEE region and one from South-America, to understand more carefully the utopistic thoughts of modernism from our present point of view. The architecture as a leitmotiv travels through the chosen films, however in each project a building with different function and history becomes the protagonist: from the sanatorium and the bath, through the bunker until the former research center.
SCHEDULE
(original sound with English subtitles)
4th of MAY, 19.00 – 20.30
ANTON VIDOKLE: Immortality for All: A Film Trilogy on Russian Cosmism, 2014-2017 (approx. 90 min)
Today the Russian philosophy known as Cosmism has been largely forgotten. Its utopian tenets – combining Western Enlightenment with Eastern philosophy, Russian Orthodox traditions with Marxism – inspired many key Soviet thinkers until they fell victim to Stalinist repression. In this three-part film project, artist Anton Vidokle probes Cosmism’s influence on the twentieth century and suggests its relevance to the present day. In Part One he returns to the foundations of Cosmist thought (This Is Cosmos, 2014). Part Two explores the links between cosmology and politics (The Communist Revolution Was Caused By The Sun, 2015) and Part Three restages the museum as a site of resurrection, a central Cosmist idea (Immortality and Resurrection for All!, 2017).
5th of MAY, 19.00 – 20.30
ABANDONED (RE)CREATION: Off Season, 2018 (35 min)
The documentary film of the artist duo abandoned (re)creation focuses on the abandoned Machnáč Sanatorium in a spa town in Slovakia. The film presents the constructivist building’s history, starting from the 30’s (architect. Jaromír Kreicar) which from the symbol of progression became an abandoned ruin.Through the history of the spa/sanatorium in Teplice, we can answer questions like: how can the culture of bathing illustrate the relationship between the state and the worker?
CLARA IANNI: Free Form, 2013 (7 min)
In her video, Brazilian artist Clara Ianni examines the building and construction of the capital of Brazil, which, in 1959 happened in the framework of modernization and development. In the center of the work is a strike which erupted during the construction work, and because of which almost 100 workers lost their lives. Ianni confronts different viewpoints: the interviews made by people in high positions, or with the architects – in which they try to repress the issue – and the photo documentation of the construction work.
VIOLANA MURATAJ: My Birthday Celebration, 2011 (31 min)
The Albanian artist, Violana Murataj chose a quite extraordinary site to celebrate her 25th birthday: a bunker. In Albania the average number of such buildings is even higher then in other countries, almost 800 000 bunkers can be found. They were built during the state socialist period and represent the paranoia and anxiety of the Cold War. Murataj deconstructs this image in her work, through changing the bunker into a site of celebration and hospitality.
12th of MAY 19.00 – 21.00
OLEKSIY RADYNSKI: Facade Colour: Blue, 2019 (22 min)
Florian Yuriev is an architect, artist, luthier, theorist and poet, who designed one of Kyiv’s most emblematic building, a former reserach center, so-called UFO (1971). Oleksiy Radynski’s documentary follows the 90 year-old architect, who takes up an active role in the protest which is against the changing the UFO building into a shopping center. Beside this, the film also reflects on the construction history of the building itself. Radynski’s film premiered in 2019 at the Oberhausen Filmfestival and after that it is shown at the Studio Gallery.
ALEXANDRU SOLOMON: Tarzan’s Testicles, 2017 (107 min)
On the highest spots of the post-soviet Sukhumi there is a research venter. The building was constructed in 1927 to arrange experiments with monkeys, in order to – according to the legend – create a new hybrid human-machine.The documentary deals with the memory and history of the special experiments, interviewing the reserarchers who are working now in Abkhazia.
