Grace Ndiritu kiállítása az INDA Galériában
Az INDA Galériában szeptember 4-én nyíló kiállítására Grace Ndiritu (UK/Kenya) Sweatshop/Rabszolgamunka címmel új festmény, kollázs és textil munkákból készített, a galéria összes termére kiterjedő installációt. A projekt a modern rabszolgaság, az úgynevezett sweatshopok és az ott készülő áruk jelenségét vizsgálja három különböző, ám több szempontból is párhuzamba állítható, sőt átfedő terület egymás mellé állításával: a művész műterme, ahol a műtárgypiacot tápláló tárgyak készülnek; a harmadik világ országai, ahol nyomorúságosan fizetett munkások készítenek luxustermékeket a luxus- divat- és általában a globális fogyasztói piac számára; és végül a bennszülött törzsek, amelyek a piacosult nyugati New Age hullám számára szolgáltatnak kultúrális és spirituális táplálékot. A kiállításon bemutatott munkák között szereplenek a művész Post-Hippie Pop Abstraction (2015-2018) című sorozatából származó festmények, rajzok és kollázsok, a Cult of The Kimono (2019) című új sorozatához tartozó kézi festésű kimonók, valamint a COVERSLUT© című, a Belgiumban, a Maneuvre rezidencián folyó divat- és gazdaság kutató-művészeti projekt keretében készült textilek. Az INDA Galériában most megrendezett kiállítás a The Year of Black Healing (2020) című, egy éves projekt első állomása. A Ndiritu munkáit a középpontba állító, nemzetközi sorozatban kiállítások, performanszok és beszélgetések kerülnek sorra, záróeseménye pedig a 2020-as Black Healing kiállítás lesz 2020 júniusában, Franciaországban. A sorozat olyan témákat vizsgál, mint az afro-futurizmus, aktivizmus, spirituális gyakorlat, fekete kultúra és neoliberalizmus.
Grace Ndirituról
Grace Ndiritu (1982) az Egyesült Királyságban született, kenyai származású vizuális művész. 22 éves korától Steven McQueen filmrendező tanítványa volt az amszterdami De Ateliersben. 2009-ben munkái a New York-i Metropolitan Museum of Art gyűjteményébe is bekerültek, 2014-ben pedig a Phaidon The 21st Century Art Book című kiadványában is helyet kaptak. Ugyanabban az évben az Apollo Magazine a tíz legfontosabb és legnagyobb hatású 40 év alatti művész között sorolta fel. Több mint negyven videómunkája, kísérleti fotói, festményei, textilmunkái, kutatási projektjei és sámánista performanszai olyan helyeken szerepeltek, mint a liverpooli Bluecoat; a briminghami Eastside Projects; a barcelonai Fundació Antoni Tàpies; a Glasgow School of Art; a varsói Modern Művészeti Múzeum (Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej); a párizsi Centre Pompidou; a londoni Chisenhale Gallery; a birminghami Ikon Gallery, a New York-i Metropolitan Museum of Art és az 51. Velencei Biennále. Műveit a Whitechapel Gallery által kiadott Documents of Contemporary Art: The Rural című (2019, Whitechapel-MIT Press) kiadványba is beválogatták.

Sweatshop
For her show at INDA Gallery, Grace Ndiritu has created a new painting and textile installation entitled SWEATSHOP. It examines the idea of the sweatshop and the objects they produce from three juxtaposing, yet, overlapping angles: i.e. The Artist Studio – artists, who make objects to feed the art market; Third World Countries – where poorly paid workers make products to feed the luxury, fashion, global consumer market; and Indigenous Tribes who produce culture and spirituality to feed the commodified New Age movement in the West. Works featured include Post-Hippie Pop Abstraction paintings and drawings (2015-2018) and Cult of The Kimono (2019), a new series of hand-printed kimonos and textile hangings from her COVERSLUT© fashion and economic research project made during a residency at Manoeuvre in Belgium. This exhibition at INDA Gallery is part of THE YEAR OF BLACK HEALING (2020), a year-long international programme of exhibitions, performances and talks focusing on Grace Ndiritu’s work, leading up to the BLACK HEALING exhibition in June 2020. It touches on topics, such as afro-futurism, activism, spiritual practice, black culture, and neo-liberalism.
Artist’s bio
Grace Ndiritu (1982) is an international visual artist. At the age of 22 she was taught at the De Ateliers, Amsterdam by film director Steven McQueen. In 2009 her art had entered into the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection in New York, gaining a place in Phaidon’s The 21st Century Art Book published in 2014. In 2014 she was also named one of the ten most important and influential artists under 40 by Apollo Magazine. Her archive of more than forty ‘handmade’ videos; experimental photographs, paintings, research projects and shamanic performances have been exhibited in places such as: Bluecoat, Liverpool; Eastside Projects, Birmingham; Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona; Glasgow School of Art; Museum Modern of Art, Warsaw; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Chisenhale Gallery, London; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and the 51st Venice Biennale. Most recently her work has been featured in Whitechapel Gallery’s publication: Documents of Contemporary Art: The Rural (2019) MIT Press.
